Who is responsible for bringing you this great website?
Creators of Mini Pig Info
Mini Pig Info was created by experienced pig parents, veterinarians and the pig rescue community; all of whom are dedicated to educating the public and advocating for miniature pigs. Our mission will always be to put the pigs first. We do not pretend to be the smartest or most experienced, we do not try to make up breeds that do not exist, we do not misuse or mislead people by eluding that "mini" pigs will stay small, as a matter of fact, our intention is to create the standard that can be used to describe pigs in an honest and effective manner. Education is key and that is precisely why we created this website.
This website is built from EVERYONE'S experiences. There have been many many people reach out and offer to help. We have asked others for input, that we consider to be knowledgable or experts, to write articles and we have asked veterinarians and other people with a lot of experience to share their information on our website. To us, it is extremely important for you to know who is writing this information and where is it coming from. Is the information credible? Is the information accurate? How do you know? What makes us experts? Those are excellent questions and something you should ask yourself any time someone steps up to answer a question you may have regardless of the venue. Maybe some of you have heard our name(s) mentioned or have seen others tag one of us on Facebook, maybe you have never heard of any of us, and that's ok, that is exactly why we have this page here on the website so you will know the people behind Mini Pig Info. This is who we are and what we have to offer. There are no secrets, there are no mysterious people who are contributing information. Anyone that has contributed to any of the articles on this website are credited for their work no matter how small the contribution. We are humbled by the amount of support we have been given during the process of building the site as well as the ongoing management and updating. Below is who designs, creates content, and writes articles for this website. If we don't have the right information here for you or know the answers to your questions we will search for the information until we do! Please check out the Facebook page for Mini Pig Info by clicking here.
Please don't hesitate to reach out to us through the website's email minipiginfo@gmail.com, Facebook, Instagram or Twitter. We will try our best to give you advice, or help in any way we can or point you in the direction of someone or a vet that would be more appropriate. Sometimes it's just nice to put faces to names.
**Disclaimer** We are not all veterinarians (though we do work with several who have helped guide us in building this website), the information posted on the website is from other credible websites, personal experiences, other piggy parent's experiences, research of our own or with others, the advice of a vet and/or other forums. ALWAYS check with your vet before giving your pig any medication or treatment. Our veterinarian advisor is just that, an advisor, and any information on the website is for information or educational purposes only and should not take the place of YOUR veterinarian's advice. If you feel like your pig is in need of emergent assistance, please contact your vet. We cannot treat your pig, our vet will NOT prescribe medication or advise you of treatment for a pig in an emergency situation. Any web based platform that is giving direction under these circumstances is not one I would feel comfortable directing people to go to for credible information. Please be sure you know who you are getting advice from, the lack of experience and/or knowledge can lead to your pigs death.

Buttercup 5 year old mini pig. Experienced with rescue, fostering pigs of various ages.
Virginia (information as of 06/01/2015)
I am not an expert, and have NEVER claimed to be. I had a tragic series of events occur with my first pig and have dedicated my life to educating myself, and now others, about pigs. Once I saw there so were many others, like me, who really wanted to learn, but didn't know where to find credible information, I started a group on FB where people could share their pig stories and pictures without being ridiculed, a safe place to ask questions and offer kind words, support or advice to others who may be struggling with a similar pig situation. I do have several years of pig experience now and combined with my medical background as a human nurse and ever growing network of pig experts, that has definitely given me an advantage to create this amazing website that's full of information about the health and general care of mini pigs. I guess you can say pigs are my passion, however....I am simply a pig mama who cares about everyone's pigs, and I mean that. I won't hesitate to donate to a rescue, or even pick up a pig at the animal control and foster. I volunteer many hours to different pig rescues, local animal control or SPCA's and offer my help physically, my experience and intellect, as well as my ability to network for pigs in need of a new home, hoof trims, supportive care, fundraising, etc...you name it and I have likely done it. I've helped many people with their pigs and pig related situations as I am able. As an active person in the "mini pig community", others have come to know me on a more personal level, obviously my name, but also my reputation for doing anything I can to help. I have poured my blood, sweat and tears into creating this website and literally work on it daily to improve the content, add additional pages and/or information or simply improve the design and try to make it more "user friendly".
I am a board member for Mo' Money for pigs, a 501c3 charity that helps pigs in need, as well as PAL (Pig Advocates League), which is also a 501c3 charity dedicated to improving the lives of pigs worldwide. A few years ago, I became involved with Smithfield Pig Save, which is an organization dedicated to raising awareness the world about the horrible and inhumane conditions surrounding the death of pigs raised for slaughter. The organization also promotes veganism and offers information to those who have seen the "connection" between the different types of pigs. Career wise, I am a human nurse, and according to Buttercup, I am the pig whisperer. I do what I can to help anyone who reaches out to me for assistance whether that be moral support, advice, physical help and even sometimes financial. I simply ask everyone else to help educate anyone who will listen. Everyone can help someone else, it doesn't have to be finanical, it doesn't even have to be rescuing or fostering, sometimes just educating others or sharing important posts or information is what you're able to do and that's great, believe it or not, sharing an educational post can be the reason a pig gets to stay in his home. Any help in debunking myths about pigs is far better than anything else you can do. Small words sometimes have a huge impact on people. I've probably scared more people out of getting a pig than I have convincing them to get one with my devil pig horror stories. And to be honest, Buttercup really isn't that bad....now she's a big girl, and usually pretty well behaved, but she has definitely caused some trouble. For someone with a yard of the month sign in their front yard? (Thankfully I have NEVER had that problem) A pig probably isn't the right pet for them. That's the information I am on a mission to pass along. The truth about pigs, educational information about pigs, helpful tips, and research I have done with regards to pigs.

Orion 5 year old female piggy
Reno, NV ~ as of 06/01/2015
Oink! My name is Nicole and I am the pig mom to Orion who is the center of my world. A random Orion fact- she has been to 25 United States!! I was undereducated and fooled by a pig broker when it was time to add Orion to my family. I was promised a 12-18 lb full grown "pocket nano" pig and little did I know I was in for my world to be forever changed. Three and a half years later I spend all of my time devoting it to Orion and pigs. Pigs are my world to say the least. I run local pig support groups, along with multiple online FB support groups. I am an avid fan of spending any time I have with pigs, whether or not they are in someones home, on a farm, or in a rescue trying to find a forever home. I specialize in hoof trimmings, behavioral training, and piggy weight loss. When I am not involved in pigs, I own my own photography business and find myself trying to be artsy and crafty while of course taking long walks on the beach! Yeah right, who am I kidding what is free time when there is pig education out there? I was humbled to be asked to work on this website and have found it to be a fun way to help others learn about pigs. I am constantly researching something pig related, so I am glad there is now a forum where I can post the great information I have discovered.

The Mini Pig Info Story: Who Created The Website?
A little about Mini Pig Info:
Let me first address the name of the website and explain why it is called Mini Pig Info. Mini is NOT a breed of pig, but rather a classification of pigs referring to a group of breeds typically smaller than a standard farm sized pig. This does not mean that these pigs are in any way, shape or form, "mini", but, the term is commonly used to distinguish the difference between pigs commonly seen as companion pets and farm pigs. The name was chosen because when people are searching for information about mini pigs, let's say on google, they type information about mini pigs in the search browser. When people are interested in adding a pig to their family, some research "mini pigs" and our hopes are for them to find us and read the information we have gathered, collected, written and/or posted to the website so they could make an informed decision BEFORE adding a pig to the family with the goal to reduce the number of unwanted pigs. Pigs are one of the most misunderstood pets out there and suffer horribly because of the lack of education. We hope to change this and the website is the first step in our fight to save pigs all over the world.
You can not buy experience, it has to be earned, but the next best alternative is to borrow it from someone who has it. No two people and no two pigs are alike on any level. With that being said, each person will also have their own opinion and way of doing things. We have tried to collect and organize many different thoughts into one forum to help guide you through any challenges you may be facing. The goal is to update this website as frequently as possible with new information as it becomes available to any of us on the team, so it will change frequently with new information and will never be a stagnant website with old and outdated information. Each section has multiple subsections and/or pages relating to the main topic. You can go directly to the topic you need or you can read through each page and discover ideas and gain insight that way. A lot of the info was collected and published from credible websites and from other experts in the field. I have learned from experience that using someone else's work and rewriting as your own typically takes away from the integrity of the article. So, instead, we would rather give credit to the person(s) who took their time to research the topics. We don't make money from this website, we don't get paid to research, write files to post, and we do not have anything to gain or sell. This website was created by experienced and caring pig parents who are passionate about pigs and simply want to help educate anyone who wants to learn about pigs with assistance from veterinarians and pig rescuers and other experts.
The goal is to educate, educate new piggy parents, educate people who are researching to see if a pig is the right pet for their family and/or help for the seasoned pig parents who may be able to learn from the information provided right here on our website. The website is free to use, there are no fees. None of the creators have never claimed to be an "expert" on pigs, however, we do have years of experience and along with many friends and veterinarians, all these people have come together to ensure the information on our website was accurate and precise. The goal is to have one place where the research has been done for you and we hope you find this to be the case. This website was written in the spirit of providing pig parents with health information all the way to the basics like medical terminology commonly used in the care of pigs, to assist them in becoming the best pig parents possible....BUT, it is not intended to replace the advice of a veterinarian. Participating in your pig’s care at home carries certain risks, both to your pig and to yourself. ALWAYS consult a veterinarian before attempting any self-maintenance. Once you are an experienced pig parent, you will have the knowledge necessary to know what is urgent and what can be treated at home.
The majority of this information is also posted in the groups we admin, as well as other forums where several people, including us, who have been active in the pig community for some time and have researched or collaborated over the last several years in order to build a website for the general public. Since everyone doesn't use social media, it was important to us to have a website and not only an educational platform on Facebook or other social media sites...Our website is one place you can go where all the research is done and sources are credited so you can note where the credible information originated from, and if it's not written by one of the MPI team members, the source where the information came from is always listed. Please feel free to email us suggestions for topics you'd like to see or issues you may be having and we will do our very best to respond as soon as possible. minipiginfo@gmail.com.
